Brazilian Government System

                                         BRAZIL GOVERNMENT TYPES

Brazil is a Federal Presidential Representative Democratic Republic, which sounds like a lot to understand! It is a Democratic Republic because the leader is elected by the people to rule the government for a set period of time. The people of Brazil get to vote on who this leader is. It is Presidential because it is a President that is the head of state and the government. it is a Federation because the power is divided amongst the different states of Brazil.

This is the Government crest showing the Government established in 1889:

The main political parties in brazil are the workers party, the Liberal party, the Brazilian Democratic Movement Party, The Progresives Party and the Brazilian Union.

Similar to Australia, Brazils Government is divided into three branches of government: The executive branch, the legislative branch and the judiciary branch. The executive branch is headed by the president and cabinet Ministers. The Executive branch is responsible for executing laws, appointing cabinet ministers, managing governemt departments and administation and foreign affairs. The Legislative Branch is made up of the Federal senate and the Chamber of Deputies. The legislative branch is responsible for creating and approving laws. Finally the Judicial Branch is made up of 4 courts: The Supreme Federal court, the superior court of Justice, The National Justice council and the regional federal courts.  The judicial branch is responsible for inetrpretting and applying the laws of the country.

Currently Brazil's President is Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. He has been president since 2023. He is the leader of the Worker's Party.

Australia is also a Democracy also but our head of state is our Prime Minister, not a president, Anthony Albanese. Australia is a Federal Parliamentary Constitutional Monarchy and representative democracy, while Brazil is a Federal Presidential Representative Democratic Republic.

Similarities between Brazil and Australia's Government:

  • Both countries are Federations meaning they divide power between the National Government and the State and Territory Governments.
  • Both are representative democracies where citzens vote for representatives to make decisions on their behalf.
  • Both have separation of powers between the three levels of government to maintain checks and balances.
  • Both have 2 levels in the legislatie branch of givernment. The House of Representatives in Australia is very similar to the Chamber of deputies in brazil. The Austrlian senate is very similar to how the Federal senate in Brazil works.
  • Both countries make it compulsory to vote.

Difference between Brazil and Australia

  • Australia's head of State is King Charles, who is a representative head of state. Our head of Government is the Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese.
  • In Brazil the head of state is also the head of government, and this is the president, not a prime minister.
  • In Australia, Jusges are elected by the Govenor General, in Brazil they are chosen by the President.
  • Australia has 2 major political parties that are stable. In brazil there are many political parties.
